Phthalate-utilizing bacteria were isolated from sewage samples collected at several plastic and paint factories. All 116 strains isolated were Gram-negative aerobic rods, except one Gram-positive micrococcus. Most of the rods were found to be Pseudomonas spp., while the remaining ones were genera Agrobacterium and Alcaligenes. The micrococcus was identified as Micrococcus sp. Some of the isolates were identified as P. pseudoalcaligenes, P. pseudoflava, and Agrobacterium radiobacter which have not been listed as phthalate ester-utilizers previously.
