Stabilities of the three steady states and transient behaviors were analyzed in the continuous phenol biodegradation by Nocardia sp. CF222 by graphical and phase-plane methods. Two stable steady states, including wash-out, existed if the phenol concentration in the feed, S_R, was greater than that of the unstable steady state, β_2. In this case, whether the system washes out or settles in the desirable steady state was determined by the initial cell and phenol concentrations. On the other hand, if S_R was chosen so that β_1<S_R<β_2,the wash-out became unstable and the system settled in the desirable steady state irrespective of the initial cell and phenol concentrations. The steady states of the continuous phenol biodegradation were in agreement with those predicted theoretically by Yano and Koga(Biotechnol. Bioeng., 11,139,1969)on the assamption that the yield coefficient was constant and the specific growth rate depended only on the concentration of growth-limiting inhibitory substrate. The transient behavior differed slightly from the prediction because of an appreciable response lag.
