Passive transfer of tuberculin hypersensitivity is considered to be quite different in nature from the adoptive immunity concerning the serum antibodies to tuberculous antigens. In this respect, however, there have been few reports comparing both at the same time after transferring the same group of cells. In the present paper the appearance of both tuberculin hypersensitivity and serum antibodies was compared simultaneously on the recipient animals intravenously injected with spleen and lymphnode cells from sensitized donors. Delayed tuberculin sensitivity transferred by means of cells from granulomatous spleen or stimulated swollen lymphnodes appeared in the recipients without any lag period lasting for several days with the highest intensity in the skin reaction immediately after the transfer. On the other hand in the same recipient animals the conditioned hemolysis antibody to tuberculin appeared at first at 4th and then 6th day after the transfer when the tuberculin sensitivity was rapidly declining. The antibody could be detected until the 7th or 14th day. This transient appearance of the antibody with lag period would suggest that it might be produced de novo by the transferred homologous cells within normal recipients, indicating that the role of the cells in transferring tuberculin sensitivity appeared to be separable from the supposed mechanism leading to the appearance of the circulating antibody. The cells transferring tuber-culin sensitivity might have pre-formed antibody-like substances already at the time of transfer.
