Following points were confirmed regarding effects of an enlarged top-land clearance upon the lubricating oil consumption (LOC), by using a cut-back piston for a supercharged diesel engine. (1) It is a misconception that cut-back pistons prevent the ring back pressure drop. (2) LOC increases markedly as an oil scrape-up function if the top-land contacts intensely against the cylinder. (3) No combustion occurs at a narrow (normal) clearance, resulting in hard carbon deposit which in turn contacts intensity against the cylinder, while combustion occurs at a wide clearance, resulting in brittle carbon deposit which is easy to come off without causing any troubles.
