Transfer of Radionuclides through Soil-Plant Pathway

The transfer of particulate ^<60>Co and ^<137>Cs in a soil-plant system was investigated. Predictive equations based on a simplified mathematical model were presented in order to estimate the transfer of those nuclides to plants. Key parameters in the equations such as leaching rate (k_w), uptake rate by plants (k_b) and distribution coefficient (K_d) were obtained through a case study and/or experimentally. Leaching rates of particulate ^<60>Co and ^<137>Cs in the litter of fallen pine needles were 5 x 10^<-4>/d and 1 x 10^<-3>/d, respectively. Uptake rates were 0.8 ml/g/d for ^<60>Co and 0.7 ml/g/d for ^<137>Cs. And the distribution coefficients in equilibrium were 45 ml/g and 850 ml/g for ^<60>Co and ^<137>Cs, respectively. It was recognized that the transfer of those radionuclides was much dependent on kb and Kd. Airborne radionuclides such as ^<60>Co and ^<137>Cs discharged from stacks of nuclear power plants are brought down to plants and soil in particulate form.
