Transient Population of Photoexcited Electrons in a Localized State at a Metal Surface

A simple naodel is introdtrced to investigate the teunporal evolution of' the density of electronswhich are excited from a tneta[ strbstr?tte to 21 loc;tlized state at the strrf'?tce by a laser ptrlse. Tlaeelectron systet?a consists of txvo strbbands in the strbstr?'tte atnd a localized state at tlae strrface,and the loc?rlized state is in resonance xvitla the ttpper strbband. The obtained expression forthe electron density in the localized state indicates tlaat the excitation process can be dividedinto txvo, i.e., direct attd indirect processes. In the latter, the transition probability reachesa rnaxirntrna at a cert;tin plnoton energy (absorption peak energy) becatrse of' the uaaornenttrnaconservatiort. This process contribtrtes strbstsrntially to the electron density and hence stronglyaffects its tempor?tl evoltrtion at the incident plaoton energy arottnd the absorption peak energy.
