Effects of Electronic Excitations on Translational Energy Distribution of Ions Scattered by Metal Surfaces

Effects of electronic excitations are investigated on the translational energy distribution of ions scattered by metal surfaces. Coupling between the translational motion of ion and degrees of freedom of metal electron system is taken into account explicitly, in the framework of model consisting of the non-interacting Newns-Anderson Hamiltonian for the electron system and translational energy of the ion. It is shown by perturbational calculation that within the Born-Oppenheimer approximation (BOA), a logarithmic singularity comes out in the energy distribution of ions scattered by metal surfaces as a Fermi surface effect. Further, it is shown that beyond BOA this singularity is weakened by interplay between electronic state transitions and state changes of ion motion during scattering process.
