Rotational Alignment in the Associative Desorption Dynamics of Hydrogen Molecules from Metal Surfaces

• We report that the alignment factors of hydrogen rnolecules desorbing in the vibrational grotundstate frorau Ctr(Ill) and Pd(111) vary nonnaonotonically with tlae final rotational state j depending on the translational energy. Upon averaging over tlae Boltztnann distribtrtion of total kineticenergies at strrface teutuperatures relevarrt to existing experitaaents, the restrlting alignrnent factorvaltre corresponds to a stnall preference for laelicopter-like rotation.
