The origin of difficulty in the numerical calculation of diffraction by a deep surfacegrating is traced to the divergence of the plane/evanescent-xvave expansion of thewave that is propagated with a Fourier function on the grating surface as its source. Aprojection operator method its developed in order to remedy the situation. The newmethod guarantees convergence for gratings of arbitrary depl.h.
