Magnetooptical effects of magnetic fluid thin film are experimentally investigated.Thin films made of magnetic fluid exhibit different transmissivities for the lightdifferently polarized relative to the direction of the magnetic field H applied along thefilm surface. The phase difference 0 induced by the magneto-birefringence increaseswith H. The function 0 of H is reduced to a universal function f,(x) irrespective of themagnetic fluids' characteristics by scaling transformation. The initial behavior of O isproportional to H. The same scaling transformation of the magnetization curve leadsto fit f,(x). The temperature dependence of 0 o beys the Curie-Weiss law 1 / (7' - 7'.).The formation of linear chain-like cluster of a few colloidal particles explains ex-perimental results of the dichroism and the birefringence fairly well.
