Vector Magnetometer and Its Application to Measurement of Magnetization Vector in Some Ferromagnets : Magnetism, Magnetic Materials and Devices

A vector magnetometer, which enables the determination of the three-dimensional orientation of a magnetic moment as well as its magnitude, has been constructed. As this magnetometer is able to measure simultaneously three components of the magnetization vector by using three pairs of pick-up coil systems, it is useful to investigate not only the technical magnetization process but also the magnetocrystalline anisotropy in a single crystal specimen. Polar maps of the magnetization vector in Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets and ferromagnetic Fe-Sn alloys were determined as functions of magnetic field and temperature. The polar maps in the Nd_2Fe_<14>B magnet are explained in terms of the distribution of domain magnetizations, considering spin reorientation. In contrast, the magnetization process of Fe-Sn alloy is interpreted by a simple concept of rotation magnetization.
