Temperature and Concentration Dependence of Magnetic Birefringence of Magnetic Fluids

It was found experimentally that the magnetic birefringence of magnetic fluid thinfilms obeys a Curie-Weiss like law for all kinds of magnetic fluids except for a waterbased one. The birefringence can be described by 0(T, H)=0.f(H)/ [7' - 7'.-F-/(#)],where 0(T, H), H and T are the phase difference, the applied field and the tempera-ture of the film, respectively, and 0. is a positive constant. T. and f (#) are also foundto be expressed empirically by T.=T.A-xlnc, /(f)=1 -exp[ -a(c)HJ, respec-tively, where c is a volume fraction of the colloidal particles, T., tc are positive constants and c*(c) is a function of c. Taking the empirical expression of 0 into consideration, the free energy of the magnetic fluid is discussed using Landau's phase transitiontheory.
