New Superlattice Crystal Structure in KCuF_3 Revealed by X-Ray Diffraction Experiments

In several experirnental sttrdies of electron paramagnetic resonance and antiferrotnagnetic res-onance perforuaaed on the one-dinaensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet KCLlF3, a DzyaJoshinsky-lVIoriya (DM) antisyrnnaetric exchange interaction between spins on the c-axis was confirtned.However, the crystal synarnetry with the space grotnp D,fi;. - 14/mcm that had been acceptedthen did not allow this interaction. Thus we doubted the old crystal structtzre. Izmproving thequality of single-crystal samples, we reexaunine the crystal strtrcttrre of KCuF3 by using an X-raydifl'raction technique at room tenaperatttre. As a resttlt, we confirna that F-atonas on the c-axisare displaced frorn the Cu-Ctr bonding lines, which difT'ers frotaa the old strtrcttrre. Consequently,a new superlattice strtucture is fortaaed both along the c-axis and in the c-plane. On the basis ofthe newly fotrnd structtnre, we determine that the space grotrp is D) - P212121, and find that thelocal syrnnaaetry around a Cu-Cu bonding line along the c-axis allows the DIVI interaction withthe DIVI vector perpendicular to the c-axis.
