Ca_2RuO_4:New Mott Insulators of Layered Ruthenate

Noncuprate layered perovskite Sr3RuO,j is a highly correlated metal and exhibits strperconduc-tivity below T. t 1.35 K. We have newly synthesized related layered ruthenates Ca3RuO,j Ill twodistinct structural phases with strbstantially different aspect ratios c/a. Blectrical and tnagnetucrneasuretnents show that the two phases are instrlating antiferrotnagnets. We argtre that bothphases of Ca3RuO.j are Ivlott insulators. The decrease of the 4d band width in comparison withthat of SrzRuO), catrsed by distortions in the RttOz planes, leads to a IVIott-Hubbard-type gap.
