Anisotropic Flux Pinning in a Layered Superconductor Sr_2RuO_4

We found pectrliar fltrx-pinning in single crystals of Srz RLlO4, the only known layered-perovskitesuperconductor withotrt copper. lVIeastrrenaents on ac susceptibility under do magnetic fields in-dicate that a second dissipation peak prorninently appears only when the direction of the fluxlines, as well as of their induced motions, is parallel to the ab planes. The anisotropic natureof this peak effect is clearly different frona that reported in high-Tc cuprates, the other class oflayered perovskite supercondtrctors. The peak efl'ect in SrzRuO,j is attributed to the synchro-nization of the flux lines to the pinning ceruters as the flux-line lattice softens with increasingmagnetic field and temperature.
