Successive phase transitions of K.ZnCl. have been studied by Raman scattering. The critical behaviour of the normal-incommensurate phase transition was discussedon the basis of the temperature dependence of the amplitude-mode frequency and theintensity ratio of this mode to the 49 cm ' peak. It does not agree with the mean-fieldtheory. At low temperatures this frequency is affected by the low-temperature phasetransition. With respect to the low-temperature phase transition, a new soft mode wasfound in addition to a totally symmetric soft mode. Polarization characteristics ofthese soft modes show that the low-temperature phase has C: symmetry. Thetemperature dependence of these soft-mode frequencies indicates that the transitiontemperature is 155 K. A Landau theory was applied to calculate the frequencies of theamplitude mode and the two soft modes.
