Neutron-Scattering Study of Magnetism in Single-Crystal Cu_<1-X>Zn_XGeO_3

A recent study of the magnetic strscepti1.ciIity in single crystals of the spin-Peierls materialCuGeO3 doped with Zn indicates antiferroraaagnetic order at low temperatures. In the presentpublication, we report a neutron scattering investigation of the static and dynamic magneticproperties of single-crystal CUO.966ZIl0.034GCO3. Below the transition temperature of 4.2 i 0.3 K,sharp magnetic Bragg peaks are observed at the magnetic superlattice positions (O k 772) withboth k and l odd. However the intensities of these peaks are not saturated even at 1.4 K, andthe long range ordered magnetic moment is only x O.2p? per Cu site. Moreover, no well-definedspin-wave-like excitations are seen. Instead, overdamped magnetic excitations appear around thernagnetic Bragg peaks at low temperatures. These results svrggest an trnusttal state of magneticorder incorporating considerable magnetic and possibly structural disorder. We speculate thatthis tunusual order is caused by a spatial distribution of spin states due to local spin-Peierlsdistortions,
