Effect of Pressure on Electronic Properties of Acceptor-Type Graphite Intercalation Compounds

Effects of hydrostatic pressure on electronic properties of acceptor-type intercalationcompounds of graphite with HNO. and SbC1. have been studied. The c-axis compre-ssibility of each compound shows characteristic behavior reflecting the structure ofintercalant layer. The de Haas-van Alphen data reveal pressure-induced changes of theFermi surface -slight swelling and distortion away from a cylindrical (two-dimensional) shape. The pressure dependence of the c-axis resistivity is much enhancedin intercalated samples compared with pristine graphite, as expectecl from sensitivenessof c-axis conduction to interlayer overlap. HN0.-compounds exhibit a resistivityanomaly around 5 kbar at room temperature, which is indicative of the onset of astructural phase transition.
