Anomalous Magnetic Anisotropy of Fe-Ni Alloys

Magnetic and thermal pr6perties of Fe -Ni In'var single crystals were studiedthrough the measurement of magnetic anisotropy energy and thermal expansionalong the principal crystallographic axes. It was found that the magnetocrysta[lineanisotropy constant, Kg, at 4.2 K is reduced from 5.4 x 10' erg/cc at 36.8 at.'%Ni-Fe to less than l x10' erg/cc at x30.8 at. '3 Ni-Fe. This behaviour is quitesimilar to that of magnetic moment, lattice constctnts and so on.The - anomalous uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy constant, K., and theanisotropic thermal expansion coefficient, ct., (A'.t0.25 x ]0'erg/cc and ox.:0.8x10 '-K-' at 300K) were observed in som<c Invar.alIoys. This ano?nalousbehaviour is considered to be due to anisotropic distribution of Fe-Fe atompaxrs.
