On the basis of the Anderson model which is extended to the localized d-states with orbital degeneracy, the magnetic anisotropy of iron group impurities in metals is studied. Values of the Coulomb and exchange integrals between two d-orbitals in the same atom are selected so that the orbital moments may be quenched. Taking into account the crystalline field splitting and the effect of the spin-orbit coupling, the anisotropy energy and the g-value are calculated for impurities in hexagonal crystals and are compared with the experimental results on iron group impurities in hexagonal cobalt.
