We present an interpretation of the anomalous temperature dependence of thelower critical field H.. recently observed in high-temperature superconductors. In thepresence of the two (.5- and d-wave) attractive forces, the superconducting phase firstrealized at the transition temperature T. can become unstable and undergo anothersuperconducting transition at a temperature T"( (< 7'.); this leads to an abrupt increase of H... The properties of the phase realized below T7 are briefly discussed.
