A general expression for the correlation function for the distribution of ferric and ferrous ions over the octahedral sites of magnetite is studied; it is based on the assumption, due to Anderson, that only configurations of two ferric and two ferrous ions in each tetrahedron of the octahedral sites are allowed. A general expression for the energy of the system due to the Coulomb interaction is also studied on the same assumption. An attempt to study the disordered state in the simplest approximation is made on the basis of these results. Approximate numerical values of the correlation function are estimated for some neighboring pairs. The energy of the disordered state is found to be higher than that of the Verway ordered structure by about 4% of the latter when the energies are measured from the value appropriate to the complete disorder state.
