A Proposal for Neutral Beam Probing of Plasma Current Profile

A neutral beam probing method is proposed for xneasurement of plasma currentprofile in a tokamak. An emulsion plate of cellulose nitrate film (CNF) is used todetect the secondary ions. This method is compared with the ion beam probingin which the primary particles are heavy tons. A ?aeutral beam is superior to anion beam for the purpose of determining plasma current profile, because theformer provides us with a higher sensitivity to th<c current profile than does thelatter. The use of CNF makes it possible to distinguish the secondary ions fromthe background because the stopping power is diffe?"ent for different species and/orenergzes.Numerical orbit calculations show that this method is applicable to any existingtokamaks with moderate requirements on the neutral beam quality.
