Critical Anomaly of Sound Attenuation and Thermal Conduction in KH_2PO_4-Type Ferroelectric Crystals

The sound attenuation α_k and the thermal conductivity λ in the KH_2PO_4-type ferroelectric crystals near the critical point are studied, employing the soft-mode model proposed by Kobayashi and then introducing an interaction between the acoustical phonons and the ferroelectric optical phonons. It is thus shown that λ has a dip, as observed, and α_k has a peak at the Curie point, resulting from the critical decrease in the frequency of ferroelectric mode. Thus it turns out that the acoustical phonon couples strongly with the ferroelectric mode of the [K-PO_4] lattice vibration through the third-order anharmonic interaction.
