Comparison of Antioxidative Effects of Eugenol and Isoeugenol on Liped Peroxidation of Brain Homogenate

Eugenol is a common and main component in herbs. The antioxidative effects of eugenol and its isomer isoeugenol were compared on lipid peroxidation of brain homogenate induced by the ferrous ion-hydrogen peroxide system. The inhibitory effect of eugenol was stronger than that of isoeugenol. These results showed that eugenol has a stronger antioxidative effect than its isomer isoeugenol. This finding demonstrated that on phenolic compounds as eugenol and isoeugenol, the antioxidative effect of allyl group-containig phenolic compound may be stronger than that of propenvl group-containing phenolic compound.
