Comparisons of the Antioxidative and Chelating Effects of Genistein and Genistin

Genistein and its glycoside genistin are isofalvones. The antioxi dative effects of genistein and genistin were compared. While genistein inhibited lecithin peroxidation induced by superoxide anion generation by xanthine-xanthine oxidase, the inhibitory effect of genistin was little. Neither had a scavenging effects on superoxide anion. Genistein had a chelating effect against Fe^<3+>, while genistin had no chelating effect. These results showed that genistein has a stronger antioxidative effect than its glycoside genistin. This effect of genistein may depend on its chelating effects.
