Adsorption of Alcohol on Hydrotalcite-Like Compounds in Nonaqueous Solvent

The activity of hydrotalcite-like compounds for alcohol adsorption in nonaqueous solvent and a relating molecular sieve action were investigated. Some hydrotalcite-like compounds of different interlayer thickness were prepared. The adsorption capacity of these compounds for benzyl aclohol in benzene was measured before and after they were dehydrated at 120-150℃. CO_3^<2-> type compound of the smallest interlayer thickness of 2.9 A showed no capacity change after dehydration, whereas, NO_3^- type and [Fe(CN)_6]^<4-> type compounds, of the interlayer thickness of 4.1 A and 5.9 A respectively showed after dehydration a remarkable capacity increase in adsorption up to 4 or 5 times as large as those of the compounds dried at 60℃. From these results, it was confirmed that the interstices in the interlayer of the hydrotalcite-like compound provides the adsorbing sites for alcohol molecule, and compounds act as molecular-sieve of varying permeability depending upon the interlayer thickness.
