Effects of alcohols and some hypnotics on ^<45>Ca^<2+> binding to Na^+, K^+-ATPase preparation from brain tissue and activities of Na^+, K^+-ATPase and K^+-dependent phosphatase were investigated. K^+-dependent p-nitrophenylphosphatase activities were inhibited by methanol, ethanol and isopropanol. The higher inhibition was shown with alcohol which had the longer chain. Ca^<2+> bindings to Na^+, K^+-ATPase preparations were increased by ethanol and methanol. The inhibitions of calcium on Na^+, K^+-ATPase and K^+-dependent phosphatase were additive to the inhibition of ethanol. Butanol, at lower concentrations showed inhibition on K^+-dependent phosphatase activities and enhancement on ^<45>Ca^<2+> bindings to the Na^+, K^+-ATPase preparation. Isobutanol showed higher ability than n-butanol on enzyme activity and calcium binding. Na^+, K^+-ATPase activities with or without 300μM Ca^<2+> and ^<45>Ca^<2+> bindings to the Na^+, K^+-ATPase preparation were not affected by urethane and chloral hydrate. Pentobarbital and chloretone also did not affect significantly the K^+-dependent phosphatase and ^<45>Ca^<2+> bindings.
