Highly Tunable Transparent-Comb-Electrode Photonic Crystals Based on Al-Doped ZnO/(Pb,La)(Zr,Ti)O

We fabricated tunable photonic crystals (PCs) advanced using the electro-optic (EO) effect. These PCs are composed of transparent Al-doped ZnO (AZO) layers as internal/external electrodes and centered (Pb,La)(Zr,Ti)O<inf>3</inf>(PLZT) layers as EO material to use the longitudinal EO effect enabling a large refractive index variations at low voltage to be obtained. The PCs consisting of four periods of AZO/PLZT multilayer were prepared by RF magnetron sputtering. The PCs exhibited a large refractive index change of 2.9\times 10^{-2} at 8 V, resulting in a high photonic band gap tunability of {\sim}1 nm/V.
