Electrochromism is known as an electrochemical reaction exhibiting coloration and can be applied to imaging devices. We successfully prepared a novel indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode modified by electrochromic molecules that displayed a magenta color via electrochemical reduction. The electrochromic molecules of a phthalate derivative were connected to the surface of the ITO electrode by a Si coupling agent. The electrochromic properties of the film were investigated in terms of film thickness and were compared to those of a film using a TiO<inf>2</inf>substrate. The thicker film showed larger absorption change and better memory retention than did the film with a TiO<inf>2</inf>substrate.
