N,Zn-codoped Fe<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf>, a p-type \alpha-Fe<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf>with a band gap of 2.0 eV, was developed by cosputtering of Fe<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf>and ZnO in a plasma mixture of N<inf>2</inf>and Ar, followed by post-annealing. Photoelectrochemical measurement revealed that N,Zn-Fe<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf>exhibits a typical cathodic photocurrent originating from the p-type conduction. It also showed a very high photocurrent, most likely originating from a higher concentration of acceptors than those of N- and Zn-Fe<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf>. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy suggested that N and Zn ions could reside at the nearest neighbor to stabilize the p-type character. N,Zn-Fe<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf>could be promising in photoenergy conversion when combined with appropriate co-catalysts.
