Vertically Y-Branched Mode Splitter/Combiner for Intraboard Chip-to-Chip Optical Interconnection with Wavelength-Division Multiplexing

Vertically Y-branched waveguides were designed and fabricated for constructing an intraboard chip-to-chip optical interconnection device with wavelength-division multiplexing at wavelength of 850-nm band. The vertically Y-branched waveguide is used for separating or contacting two vertically stacked waveguides, namely, a signal transmission waveguide and an add/drop waveguide. Coupling efficiency in mode splitting or combining was predicted to be 98% with a taper length of 160 μm and a splitting layer of 5-μm thickness. Two-dimensional vertical-Y-branch waveguides were fabricated on a SiO2 substrate by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. Mode splitting and combining functions were demonstrated.
