Driving of Liquid Crystal Lens without Disclination Occurring by Applying In-Plane Electric Field

A new method is proposed to drive a liquid crystal lens with no defects occurring. A voltage difference remains between the two ends of one of the lens' electrodes for a short time and an in-plane electric field forms in the liquid crystal, making the total field tilt to one side. The directors then rotate in the same direction. The disclination line, often found in liquid crystal lenses driven by the conventional drive method, does not appear, and the good quality of the lens is preserved.
