Vibrational Relaxation Measurements of Methane by a Lazser Schlieren

Vibrational relaxation time τ of a gaseous methane behind shock waves at pressure p, are measured from the density variation obtained by using a narrow beam laser schlieren method. The results obtained for a temperature range of T=300-800K are shown in a Landau-Teller plot, which shows essentially the linearity of ln pτ versus T^<-1/3>. Also the results obtained by the ultrasonic method are shown to give a good comparison with the present method.
