Flip-Flop and Oscillating Behavior Obtained with Serial Connection of Liquid Crystal Bistable Optical Device Pixels

An easily operated and compact liquid crystal bistable optical device (LCBOD) can be obtained by adopting internal optical feedback. Since the structure of the pixel is quite simple, it is easy to connect pixels in series. When 2 pixels are connected to have a common feedback loop, a flip-flop behavior with complementary ON-OFF properties can be obtained. In case of the connection of 3 pixels, a well-regulated oscillating behavior can be observed and the three oscillating waves of transmitted light intensity are shifted one-third of the oscillating period relative to each other. The waveform and period are investigated for various voltage levels.
