Experimental reflectivities in Kretschmann configuration of vacuum-evaporated Au films immersed in water in the infrared spectral range are not consistent with a theory involving bulk optical constants, effective media models and the classical electromagnetic theory based on Fresnel's equations. However the experimental ratio of reflectivities of the Au film in methanol and that in water in the spectral range of the methanol C–H stretch vibrations can be fitted by the classical electromagnetic theory. Surprisingly, this is not possible in the spectral range of the C–O stretch vibration of methanol.
