A novel skeletal sesquiterpenic hydrocarbon, fukinane (I), has been prepared by conversion from an eremophilane type, fukinone (VIII), <I>via</I> fukinan-8-ol (IX). A rearrangement of the fukinane skeleton into an eremophilane type through fukinan-8-ol tosylate (X) has been studied.
