The reaction of 2′-hydroxychalcones with mercury(II) acetate in acetic acid gives predominantly 2-benzylidene-3(2<I>H</I>)-benzofuran-3-ones (aurones) in 28–62% yield accompanied by flavanones in 5–21% yield.
