(Synthesis of 2<I>S</I>,3<I>R</I>,4<I>R</I>)-2-hydroxymethyl-3,4-pyrrolidinediol and 4-acetamido-1,2,3-tri-<I>O</I>-acetyl-4-deoxy-L-xylopyranose were attained in four steps from D-mannose, using iron(III)-catalyzed photoreaction as a key reaction.
