Bromide and chloride anions could be readily oxidized into positive halogens by treating with <I>p</I>-nitrobenzenesulfonyl peroxide. The positive halogens, thus formed, reacted with olefins to give epihalonium ions, which were trapped by oxygen nucleophiles inter- or intramolecularly to afford oxyhalogenated compounds.
