The reaction of nitriles with phosgene in the presence of hydrogen chloride was carried out for synthesizing α,β-unsaturated isocyanates. 3-Chloropropionitrile, 2,3-dichloropropionitrile, isobutyronirtile, and 2-chloromethylpropionitrile gave the corresponding α-chloro-α,β-unsaturated isocyanates in moderate yields (27–50%). Propionitrile, n-butyronitrile, and 3-phenylpropionitrile gave the corresponding pyrimidines as the major product. 3-Phenylpropionitrile, however, gave the isocyanate as the major product when the amount of benzene as a solvent increased. Reaction pathways to isocyanates and pyrimidines were discussed.
