The title compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P2<SUB>1</SUB>2<SUB>1</SUB>2<SUB>1</SUB>, with cell dimensions of <I>a</I>=10.43, <I>b</I>=15.45, <I>c</I>=13.65 Å, and <I>Z</I>=4. The structure was determined by direct methods from photographic data, and was refined by the least-squares method to a final <I>R</I> of 0.098 for 2581 reflections. Rings A and B are subject to steric strains resulting from the formation of a lactone ring. This is reflected in the abnormal values for some bond lengths, angles, and dihedral angles.
