Carboxylation of 2,4,4-trimethyl-1-pentene and 1-octene with carbon monoxide was studied in the presence of various strong acids–H<SUB>2</SUB>O–Cu(I) carbonyl catalyst systems in an attempt to find a practical method for the preparation of carboxylic acids. The reaction takes place smoothly at room temperature to give tertiary acids in higher yields than that with the use of sulfuric acid. The procedure is preferable for the ready separation of products from the catalyst layer without quenching by water.
