A preparative method for the <I>N</I>-benzyloxycarbonyl hydroxy amino acid <I>t</I>-butyl esters using the aceto-acetyl group as a protecting group for the hydroxyl group of hydroxy amino acids is described. The acetoacetyl group is readily introduced into the hydroxyl group with diketene and effectively deprotected from the O-protected compounds using hydrazine.
