The Author collected small mammals on the hillside of Mt. Kiyomizu (351 m. alt.), Fukuoka Prefecture, in the period of November 1961 to December 1968. The region investigated is about 40-200 m, in altitude and includes a broad leaved and evergreen forest, a Japanese ceder forest, a forest of bamboo trees and a small field. In these habitats excluding the Japanese ceder forest, Urotrichus talpoides and Apodemus speciosus are widely distributed and their population densities are high. Apodemus argenteus is abundant in the broad leaved and evergreen forest, though it is rare in the field, and does not occur in the forest of bamboo trees. Twenty-eight specimens of Antelioynys smithi were trapped in the broad leaved and evergreen forest and one at the edge of a cultivated field. This species is considered to be rare in lowlands of Kyushu Island, but the author believes that it is a regular member in the broad leaved and evergreen forest habitats on the lowlands. A specimen of Crocidura dsinezumi and that of Mus musculus molossinus were also trapped in the broad leaved and ever green forest in the region. Apodemus argenteus and Apodemus speciosus occur together in the woodlands in the above-mentioned region of Mt. Kiyomizu, and A. argenteus seems to be more numerous in the moist and dark areas than A. speciosus. Generally speaking, A, speciosus is more abundant during the time from December to early March in the woodlands, while A. argenteus is more abundant from late March to May. It seems to be due to the difference between the peaks of reproductive periods of the two species. Trapping rates of these small mammals are considerably reduced during the summer and the fall (May to November) .
