This observation was on the breeding season of the shrew mole in the submontane areas (40-250 m alt.) of Mt. Kiyomizu and other localities in Fukuoka Prefecture, based on the data of 264 specimens collected in the period from November 1960 to May 1970.<BR>The seasonal variation of the left testis size of male specimens is shown in Fig. 1 and the seasonal occurrences of oestrus females, pregnant females and lactating females in Table 2. Judging from these data, it seems that the shrew mole has a breeding season from winter to spring (January to May) . This occurs most remarkably in February. In May, no pregnant female was collected.<BR>The earliest occurrences of a pregnant female and a lactating one were on the 21 st of January and on the 12 th of February 1962 at Mt. Kiyomizu, respectively. The earliest occurrence of the young was on the 27 th of March 1965.<BR>The embryo size of 19 pregnant females is 2 to 5, averaging 3.5.<BR>The sex ratio of 264 specimens is 100 : 71.4 ; the male is significantly more than the female in number in the submontane areas in Fukuoka Prefecure.
