This observation was on reproduction of the Japanese wood mouse, Apodemus speciosus speciosus (TEMMINK, 1845), in the submontane area (40-200 m alt.) of Mt. Kiyomizu in Fukuoka Prefecture, based on the data of 343 specimens collected in the period from December 1960 to September 1970. In the population of this mouse in Mt. Kiyomizu, young specimens (25 g or less in weight) were collected only from November to May. Reproductively active males occurred in September. This activity of the males was maintained up to March and their testes atrophied remarkably in April. Oestrous females were found from October to February, pregnant ones from October to April, exclusive of January, and lactating ones from October to May. On the whole it can be concluded that the Japanese wood mouse in Mt. Kiyomizu has its breeding season from September to May (copulation period in September to March) . In January, however, the reproductive activity of this kind of mouse may be weakened to some extent. The young born in the first half of the breeding season began to reproduce within that season. The earliest occurrence of active young females was in Novem-ber and that of males in the same state was in January. Females seem to arrive at puberty earlier than males do. The mean number of embryos in 18 pregnant females was 4.3 with a range of 2 to 7. The number of embryos per female significantly decreased in the latter half of the season.
