This observation was on reproduction of the Smith's red-backed vole, Anteliomys smithi (Thomas, 1905), in the submontane area (40-200m alt.) of Mt. Kiyomizu in Fukuoka Prefecture. It is based on the data of 78 specimens collected in the period from November 1960 to July 1972. The season of reproduction may fluctuate to some extent from year to year, but such yearly variance is disregarded on account of the small sample size of them. The population density of this vole is very low in that area. Reproductively active males were collected from November to March and females in the same condition from November to April. Excepting one subadult male taken in December, the rest collected in November and December were all more than 25g in body weight and active in reproduction. High activity of reproduction was found continuously from November through February, but in March, this became less. Except lactating females, no reproductively active males and females were collected in April. Though the only female taken in October was still anestrus, judging from the appearances of pregnant females in November and a subadult male in December, copulation may have occurred in October. The breeding season of Mt. Kiyomizu population is similar to those of other populations in the lower parts of montane areas in Honshu and Shikoku, but that of Mt. Kiyomizu population seems to be shorter than the latter. The young vole born early in the breeding season arrives at puberty within that same season. The earliest occurrence of young active voles was in January. Out of the 13 pregnant females collected, seven females were also nursing their young. The number of embryos, ranging 2 to 7, averages 4.1 per female as far as these 13 pregnant females are concerned. The mean number of embryos of Mt. Kiyomizu population is larger than those of other populations in Honshu and Shikoku. Atrophied fetuses were found in two pregnant females.
