This observation is on reproduction of Apodemus argenteus in the submountain area (40-200 m alt.) of Mt. Kiyomizu in Fukuoka Prefecture. It is based on the data of 494 specimens collected in the period from November 1960 to September 1971. Of the population of this species in Mt. Kiyomizu, the mice collected in Oc-tober and November were more than 15 g in weight and reproductively active. The young mice not exceeding 10 g in weight occurred from December to May. Reproductive activity of this species was approximately maintained till the end of April in both sexes. In April, however, its activity became remarkably less. It may be concluded that the population of this species in Mt. Kiyomizu usually has a breeding season from October to April (the main copulation period, October to March) . No specimen was cllected in August and September, so its reproductive con-dition in these two months is not clear. Incidentally, in the breeding season from autumn 1969 to spring 1970, the reproductive activity happened to be low. The young born in the earlier period of a breeding season reached to sexual maturity within that same season. The earliest occurrences of the active young in both sexes were found in December. The mean number of embryos in 23 pregnant females was 4.1 with a range of 3 to 6. The number of embryos per female decreased significantly in the latter half of the season.
