Ectopic gastric mucosa in the cervical esophagus as a cause of abnormal sensation in the throat.

The endoscopic diagnosis of congenital ectopic gastric mucosa in the cervical esophagus has recently become possible.However, symptoms have rarely been attributed to its presence.We treated a 45-year-old woman with isolated ectopic gastric mucosa in the cervical esophagus who had complained an abnormal sensation in the throat for one year.Physical examination was normal and her esophagogram was negative, but esophagoscopy revealed an area of reddish raised mucosa, about 5mm in diameter, arising from the antero-lateral wall of the cervical esophagus.Histological examination of the biopsied specimen showed columnar epithelium consistent with gastric mucosa.Since the endoscopic treatment, the patient has been asymptomatic without any medical treatment.Ectopic gastric mucosa has the potentiality of malignant transformation to adenocarcinoma.Therefore, endoscopic examination of the cervical esophagus is indicated in the evaluation of persistent abnormal sensation in the throat.
